The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

Would you like to provide feedback about these actions?
We need more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander principals in all our schools, they need to be targeted for developmental and promotional opportunities. Also pay structures need to reflect the skills and experience they bring to schools to improve community engagement.
Improving teacher supply
The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

We need to offer scholarships with guarantee of employment.
We need to fund HECS to cover M. teach for those students who have completed B. Arts and B. Science.
We need targeted places in teaching programs for Indigenous students with fully funded with scholarships.
A previous campaign for 1,000 suc teachers was very effective.
Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)
The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

We also need to support students to be successful with the Literacy and Numeracy test, many have completed their degree studies but fail this test. This results in people not getting through who have competently completed their studies and professional placements.
Maximising the time to teach
The actions proposed will improve retention and free up teachers to focus on teaching and collaboration.

All teachers need time for ongoing professional development, they particularly need opportunities to prepare and meet the AITSL standards for teaching about Australian Indigenous histories and cultures and teaching Indigenous students.

We need to focus and regional and remote teacher development and opportunities for students to return to their respective communities, this will ensure longer term contribution to the profession.
Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession
The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.

HALT need to be able to demonstrate leadership and competence in relation to Indigenous education, this needs to be a key performance criteria for promotion and pay rate recognition.
