I am currently in my 3rd year of my Teaching Degree I appreciate seeing some actions being taken to help support the industry I am going into and love. There has been a large focus on what needs to be done, what improvements can we make to attract others, trying to get other graduates/professions interested, etc.
The largest negative the lack of want/proposal of how can we use myself and fellow students to address these needs, mostly in regards with how stupid the Limited Authority to Teach is for me and fellow colleagues to undertake.
I was teaching a .5 load earlier in the year at a school that was struggling to get teachers, just like all of them. I loved this school and was making a positive impact in my student's life. Because of the Act of 1993 (Almost 20 years old) - no professional recognition would be acquired while doing a LAT. That is what Teach WA stated. I had to quit because of this. I was making all my own resources, I was planning all my classes, I was creating all the programs, I was doing all the things a qualified teacher was expected to do. In my eyes if I was to do a LAT on a .5 load for two years I am absolutely deserving to begin my career at a 2.2 instead of a 2.1 when I graduate. I could understand if I was walking into my class and was being given all the resources and planning but this was not the case.
That school lost a teacher because of this outdated Act. I lost a school and community I feel in love with because of this outdated Act. Those student's lost a teacher that cared and was making a positive impact from this outdated Act.
Instead of looking at what you need to bring in to help ease the load on the workforce why don't you look at what you have? That is me and fellow cohort.
Change the Act around Limited Authority to Teach and let us gain the professional development that we deserve. By doing this you will have a substantial workforce available.
Improving teacher supply
The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.
