Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

Please review the length of time it takes to become qualified as a teacher. More practicum/placements, condense the course work and make it more intensive, have a year long internship and a 2 year degree. The aim must be to get people into the profession faster and then hold on to them.

4 years for an undergrad, or 5 years post grad/ masters of ed is far too long for such a poorly paid career.

Very few people can afford to retrain or put their career on hold while they study for so long. Qualifying as a teacher just doesn't appeal even if people want to give back to the community - too much time, not enough money/reward for the sacrafice and stress.

Universities everywhere are offering students double degrees in 4 years (lots in 3 if students are prepared to work a little harder each semester). These grads have more career options and are paid better.

Also, formal mentoring and new educator support is far more impactful on the development of teachers/new educators than the length of time they study their course.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

Great start but we need more.

Please consider an on-the-job training system to fast track teachers into the classroom. Some university study and a year long (paid) internship would be far better IF the schools that have these teachers also have plenty of HALT to support, coach and develop them.

We need to think of creative ways for other adults to step in and caring for children. If you don't need an education degree AND current teacher registration to do the role/duty/action, then someone other than a teacher should be doing it. It's that simple.

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
