Elevating the profession

The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

Strongly agree

There has to be a commitment from all politicians and political parties to never say anything derogatory about leaders/teachers/schools, and until this happens the status, integrity and respect once afforded to the profession will not return.
The license to 'blame the education sector for everything wrong in society' has come from the top down and has spread through every community and the media that it's okay to be derogatory and disrespectful to leaders/teachers/schools.

That is the number one reason why it is very difficult to attract and retain teachers especially in country and rural settings.

There is not one individual alive who has not benefitted from the work of a teacher.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

Somewhat agree

Teaching degrees need to be very much like an apprenticeship. There is too much theory and not enough practice in putting the theory into practice, Student teachers should be working alongside experienced professional teachers in the classroom at least 2 days a week for the first year and then gradually building this up over the next few years as they become more proficient.

They could be paid like an apprentice and have their HECS subsidised as well. If they chose to work in rural/remote or hard to staff schools they could have their HECS paid in full.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

Get rid of performance pay and all the talk about it. This undermines collaboration and the only way the teaching profession can thrive is learning from each other in a culture of mutual respect and trust.

Better understanding future teacher workforce needs

How effective are the proposed actions in better understanding future teacher workforce needs, including the number of teachers required?

Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
