Elevating the profession

The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

Strongly agree

The profession needs to be lifted. The quality of graduates coming through is quite low with poor skills and knowledge. The social standing of teachers is low. More needs to be done to lift this. Lift the ATAR so we get better quality graduates, create better working conditions by cutting all the administration and red tape, then you might find the profession is more attractive.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

Neither agree nor disagree

Specific Early Childhood Education degrees need to be returned to Universities and not have them mixed in with Primary School teaching. It's a totally different curriculum and students are not being supported in this field. Increasing the number of teachers must also come with increasing the ATAR to get better teachers. At the moment the entry is so low we are getting lots of students into teaching because they couldn't get into their desired profession so this is the fall-back job.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

Please bring back specific Early Childhood Teaching degree's in SA. UniSA have dropped the ball big time on this and the quality of teacher's coming through to Preschools is shocking, they have little understanding of the Early Years and it's curriculum and pedagogy.

Maximising the time to teach

The actions proposed will improve retention and free up teachers to focus on teaching and collaboration.
