Perhaps not make teaching about the NAPLAN.
As a school leader, I had a conversation with a regional official who told me there were 133 days until the 2023 NAPLAN and what is my school's plan in order to make sure kids perform.
Later that month i outlined my plan - basically about teaching to the test. I have never ever believed this however what I have been forced to do. My regional staff loved my response and used it as an exemplar.
Teachers feel "under the pump" about NAPLAN results- Principals feel "Under the pump" about NAPLAN results. Hence many of the fun type teaching and activities disappear from the yearly calendar because we need to make sure our top 2 bands are growing!
It's a sad profession now. Teachers have lost passion because of this. They lost their love of teaching, following a tangent, hooking into a child's interest at a whim.
Remove the NAPLAN "be all and end all" tag and teachers will be happy to stay or join.
*not saying don't do NAPLAN - it is an important measure it's more how much it's focused on!
