More needs to be done to support teachers in particular with the relationship with parents. Parents need to work with teachers and not against them.

Teacher supply would improve if there was a direct and purposeful working relationship between universities and schools. Studies and degree courses should be linked directly with schools. Increase the amount of face to face contact in the first year of studies. Introduce an apprenticeship or scholarship whereby preservice teachers spend at least one day a week in the classroom and increase this to two or three days a week for the remaining years of study.
Currently preservice teachers do not have enough experience in the classroom.
An added incentive to current teachers would be a financial incentive / payment to take on the role of mentor to support and guide the preservice teachers.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

Increase teacher salaries by about 50% and teachers would be taken seriously as professionals doing a job that benefits the whole country now and into the future.
