The 2013 National Early Childhood Education and Care Workforce Census examined the early childhood education and care workforce in all states and territories.
This is the second census in the series. The first census was conducted in 2010. A further census was conducted in late 2016. The results from the 2016 survey are expected to be available by August 2017.
Results of the census allow governments to make positive changes to early childhood education and care. For example, information collected in the 2013 Census showed that the early childhood education and care workforce increased by 10% in the three years since 2010 and more of that workforce were gaining relevant professional qualifications. This has provided valuable information about the effectiveness of policies introduced in recent years to improve quality in early childhood education and child care.
Census Report
The 2013 National Early Childhood Education and Care Workforce Census report takes the information gathered in the census and presents an overview of:
- the early childhood education and care workforce
- characteristics of Child Care Benefit approved child care services
- preschool programs
- staff survey highlights.
Data tables
In addition to the report, the 2013 Census provides data tables presented in a spreadsheet. These present data by state and territory as well as remoteness categories.
Where tables were included for the first time in 2013, these tables have also been reproduced using previously unpublished data from the 2010 Census.
