Elevating the profession
The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.
Somewhat agree
Would you like to provide feedback about these actions?
Action 1 specifies a range of settings - all settings should be included. Incluidng the arts, languages, humanities, phys ed and literacy. Educators develop skills and value add to society across all sectors.
I am concerned about the increased number of medals/awards for teachers having the opposite affect, that parents and the community would not want to nominate teachers (particularly for the order if australia) and would think the profession doesnt deserve it.
I think elevating the profession needs to come from the government, media and how they discuss teaching. Maybe we should also make it harder to become a teacher, higher atar score for example at universities. I know we have a shortage but we need people to know teachers are highly educated and we wnat highly educated people to study teaching.
Improving teacher supply
The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

Offering money incentives to study teaching is great, what happens if they dont finish the teaching degree? or teach for one year and leave? Again, maybe we need to make the entrance score to get into teaching higher, so that well educated people will choose to study teaching.
Giving an opportunity to pass the literacy test earlier and then if failing, get extra support, devalues the profession and our role to teach literacy and numeracy to students. If teachers need support, how will they improve the learning outcomes of students?
Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)
The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

Teachers need to have high levels of literacy and numeracy, otherwise they will disadvantage both students and their colleagues as they will need extra support. This could drive more teachers away from the profession.
Maximising the time to teach
The actions proposed will improve retention and free up teachers to focus on teaching and collaboration.

If teachers in high school taught one less class and had time to mark, program, moderate and complete admin tasks - more teachers within the profession would stay.
This would be more dott for Primary teachers as well.
Reduce the expectation that parents can contact teachers whenever they want, and demand action right away. Also put boundaries in place around when emails can be sent in the work day and not on weekends either.
Better understanding future teacher workforce needs
How effective are the proposed actions in better understanding future teacher workforce needs, including the number of teachers required?
Very effective

National standards for consistency are important and would be effective across the country.
Universities need to liaise with schools more to update their teaching courses - more and more graduates are coming to start teaching with very little understanding of what the job entails. Why isnt CMS completed at university?
Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession
The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
