Elevating the profession

The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

Somewhat agree

I think these actions are great but it's disappointing to see that Arts teachers are not included in Action 1. While I appreciate that the world is moving towards STEM and the importance of this, I strongly believe that arts should still be included.

Arts is integral to the development of students and should be actively recognised.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

There is a lot of focus on encouraging professionals to enter the teaching industry, but there are hardly any points about retaining the current teachers. I strongly believe that the understaffing issue does not lie with the fact that there are not enough trained teachers, it is linked to the fact that teachers are leaving the profession at record rates because they are overworked, overwhelmed and the support offered is very superficial.

I personally am fighting to not 'become a statistic' and leave in my 5th year due to the intense workload that I face as a secondary music teacher. More support and incentives to stay need to be offered to current teachers, rather than the incoming education students.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.

More support for teachers on a non-leadership pathway needs to happen. There are points about supporting teachers into leadership, but not everyone wants that option.
