Paying teachers more is not the answer to the teacher shortage. The wage is actually fairly reasonable. This is not new information. There needs to be a change in teacher workload. We should not be expected to complete so much admin paperwork. Telling QLD teachers to not check their emails on the weekend is not going to help with teachers being overworked. More non contact time is needed to enable teachers to plan appropriate and engaging lessons for students, not answer emails and fill in oneschool reports. This was supposed to be reviewed as part of the last EBA, however our needs were not met. Instead of supporting teachers to have a reduced workload, they were put between a rock and a hard place and basically told to take the pay rise or nothing.
There also needs to be shift in the way teachers are represented in society. Teachers are seen as glorified baby sitters are are not treated with the respect they deserve. They are the first to be blamed for negative student results and this is not the case.
There should also be more subjects provided about classroom management at university. Far too many preservi e and beginning teachers are not prepared to enter the classroom as they do not have any idea about classroom management. Student Behaviours in the classroom are becoming increasingly difficult and teachers are struggling to cope with the behaviours in the classroom as they are unprepared. This then affects their mental health and stops them from continuing in the profession.
