Providing infrastructure of the quality and scale required to support cutting-edge research requires strategic nationwide, long-term planning. The Government produces National Research Infrastructure Roadmaps to help identify Australia’s research infrastructure needs, set priorities, and guide investment.
Roadmaps are developed every 5 years to ensure Australian research remains competitive and relevant. The development of a Roadmap for implementation from 2026 will refresh advice to Government and build on the recommendations and priorities identified in the 2021 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap.
The NRI Advisory Group, established by the Government in late 2022 is responsible for developing the next Roadmap. The 2026 Roadmap will act as a key policy document, providing guidance to government on actions that will enable researchers to maintain excellence, increase innovation and address emerging challenges.
Formal development of the Roadmap will commence in early 2025, with a range of opportunities for consultation and engagement with all stakeholder groups and research communities.
The final Roadmap is expected to be provided to the Minister for Education and the Minister for Industry and Science.
