Following a 12-month Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) trial, Education Ministers have agreed to permanently remove test limits for candidates. This means there will no longer be a limit to the number of times a candidate can sit the test. The trial showed removing test limits and providing better feedback led to more candidates sitting the test and meeting the standard, and the changes were received positively from candidates and higher education providers.
Prior to graduation, all Australian initial teacher education students are required to meet the LANTITE standard to demonstrate they have been assessed as being in the top 30 per cent of the adult population for personal literacy and numeracy. The test provides a nationally consistent way to assess aspects of an individual’s personal literacy and numeracy skills.
This change will allow all candidates to continue to improve their personal literacy and numeracy skills to ensure they can meet the required standard. Higher education providers will continue to play a key role in supporting their students to meet the standard.
The trial was an action from the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan.
