Feedback

Placements are horrendous. They're I'll advised brief snippets of extremely high pressure time leading a class. They do little to enhance ITE as too often pre service teachers are stressed about they assignment accompanying the placement. Periods of placement make it extremely difficult for mature age entrants into teaching degrees because, unlike students straight out of high school, they can't easily go up to 6 weeks at a time without working.

Most of the educational learning pre service teachers undertake is theoretical and extremely idealistic. The realities of the profession are much different. It is my strong belief that teaching should be an apprenticeship. Where pre service teachers work as teachers aides in classroom gaining practical experience through out their degree. When they have a placement they take over as the main teacher in a classroom they're already comfortable in.

I also do not believe that improving ITE solves the issue of the teacher shortage. But if you want to improve ITE in a world where you can't keep teachers in the profession once they realise the harsh realities of that profession I would advocate for more practical experience for pre service teachers.

By changing ITE to more of an apprenticeship and providing classes with a pre service teachers as an aide. Maybe just maybe you kill 2 birds with one stone. An aide in the room will help alleviate some of the stress on classroom teachers currently and perhaps help retain some of the teachers that don't want to teach.
