Elevating the profession

The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

It needs to be communicated to the majority of Australians that teaching is not a 'cop-out' career.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

Stronger emphasis needs to be on the value of teachers in order to improve teacher supply. Nobody wants to be a teacher, and those who do are difficult to retain, because of the enormous disrespect and dehumanisation teachers face on a daily basis. In order to combat this, teachers need to be treated on par with doctors and lawyers. The pre-requisites to get into a teaching course need to be harder, not easier to achieve. This will initially thin the herd but in the long term the benefits will be many - we need to think long-term, not bandaid solutions!

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

More practicums should be required in all teaching courses. I teach with far too many underprepared UWA or TFA teachers who have not had the same classroom experience as others because their 'prestigious' course doesn't allow it!

Maximising the time to teach

The actions proposed will improve retention and free up teachers to focus on teaching and collaboration.

Admin tasks should be outsourced or collaboratively undertaken, as per HOLA instruction. Look at the way the English Department at [REDACTED] (WA) cuts down on double-handling through use of apps like Notion and No More Marking!

Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
