Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP, has announced 10 Suburban University Study Hubs to be established in outer metropolitan locations across Australia.
In response to the Australian Universities Accord Interim Report, the Australian Government announced $32.5 million to build on the Regional University Study Hubs program model and adapt to the outer suburbs of Australia’s major cities.
The Suburban University Study Hubs, selected through the recent application process, will be established in the following locations:
- Broadmeadows and Epping, VIC
- Melton, VIC
- Macquarie Fields, NSW
- Kurri Kurri, NSW
- Ellenbrook, WA
- Mandurah, WA
- Armadale, WA
- Elizabeth, SA
- Strathpine, QLD
- Sorell, TAS
One successful applicant from Victoria will operate a hub in two locations, bringing the total number of SUSH locations to 11.
The hubs will support tertiary students living in these areas to access and succeed in their studies. They will provide:
- study spaces and break-out areas
- computer and video conferencing facilities including high-speed internet access
- student support services such as help with developing writing and research skills, study advice and assistance with administrative processes.
Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP said:
“Almost one in two young people in their 20s and their 30s have a university degree today. But not everywhere. Not in our outer suburbs and not in regional Australia.
“That’s why we are doubling the number of University Study Hubs, to bring university closer to them.
“We know they work. The evidence is they increase the number of people going to uni and finishing a uni degree.
“Now for the first time, we are putting these University Study Hubs in the outer suburbs.
The Suburban University Study Hubs are in addition to the 46 Regional University Study Hubs located in all states and the Northern Territory. Forty-one hubs are open and supporting students, with the remaining hubs expected to open in 2025.
A supplementary targeted application round has also been announced, to establish up to 4 additional Suburban University Study Hubs. The round will target areas of need in Southern and Western Brisbane, Southeast Melbourne, Western Melbourne and Southwest of Melbourne (including Geelong), and Western and South-western Sydney. These areas have high population density, low attainment rates and were underrepresented in the recent application process. Eligible organisations and potential partners are encouraged to apply.
