The Regional University Study Hubs program recently celebrated the opening of a further three study hubs across Australia, and an existing study hub opening its new site.
Ashburton University Study Hub in Western Australia opened two sites on 14 and 27 November, Gippsland East Study Hub Outreach unveiled five sites across Victoria in October and November, and Country Universities Centre (CUC) RAPAD Central West Queensland opened the first of eight locations across the state on 12 December. CUC Ovens Murray in Victoria opened in its new Wangaratta premises on 6 December.
The hubs provide opportunities for students living in regional and remote areas to gain better access to university across the country without having to leave their community.
The hubs provide study spaces, fast internet, printing facilities, computers, and free student support, including academic skills advice.
CUC RAPAD Central West Queensland’s eight sites will operate in Longreach, Barcaldine, Blackall, Winton, Boulia, Bedourie, Birdsville and Jundah. The facilities are expected to start supporting students by Semester 1 2025.
Ashburton University Study Hub currently supports 16 students at its Onslow facility, while 19 students are supported at the Tom Price location.
As of April 2024, Gippsland East Study Hub was supporting 84 students, with the new Outreach sites expected to grow numbers further, while CUC Ovens Murray was supporting 153 students.
Ashburton University Study Hub student, Sophie Forgo, is studying a Bachelor of Health Science/Master of Occupational Therapy.
“The study hub is a great place to study away from home. Its calm and quiet environment allows me to get my work done without distractions. The support is another big plus. It’s the perfect mix of focus and support, and it has really helped me stay motivated and on track,” Sophie said.
Another student, Scott Stenson, is studying a Bachelor of Engineering.
“I enjoy the study hub because it affords me the opportunity to connect with other students, as studying remotely can be challenging,” Scott said.
“The hub has excellent facilities that provide a relaxed environment to study.
“Studying whilst raising a family is challenging and the hub has provided the support needed to assist with these challenges.”
There are currently 46 Regional University Study Hubs located across Australia, of which 41 are currently open and operating. The remaining hubs are expected to be operational by Semester 1, 2025.
In early 2024, almost 4,400 students were being supported by the 33 hubs that were operating, a 29 per cent increase since the same time last year. Since the program’s establishment, 12,836 students have been supported by a Regional University Study Hub.
