New resources are available to support children and young people with disability and their parents and caregivers. Through helpful tools and tips, practical information is provided about the rights of students with disability across educational settings.
The resources were co-designed by Children and Young People with Disability (CYDA) and developed in consultation with disability organisations and education bodies across Australia. The resources provide helpful guidance to parents, caregivers and students to help them communicate and address concerns with their education provider.
The resources are:
- Steps to raise a concern and resolve a complaint with your school: supports parents and caregivers to raise, escalate and resolve concerns with their school.
- How to advocate: for students to help them to build self-advocacy skills and learn how to raise and resolve concerns with their education provider.
- Getting started: for parents and caregivers of students with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It helps to increase awareness of disability and the Australian education system.
- Be a disability ally: an animation for all students that explores the rights of students with disability to participate in every part of school life. It also encourages students without disability to become allies to students with disability.
- A day at school: an animation for primary school students with disability and their parents and caregivers. It discusses the rights of students under the Disability Standards for Education 2005, reasonable adjustments, and inclusion in education.
