The Fleurieu Regional University Study Hub has officially opened in Victor Harbor, South Australia.

The Fleurieu Study Hub is the 7th hub to open in South Australia, as part of the Australian Government’s Regional University Study Hubs program. This further builds on opportunities for regional and remote students across the country to gain better access to university.

The hub is co-located with the local TAFE SA Victor Harbor Campus, which leverages existing infrastructure and allows greater connection between local students and higher education.

Regional University Study Hubs provide students with facilities that allow them to study for a university degree without having to leave their community. This includes access to study spaces, fast internet, printing facilities, computers, and free student support services, including general academic skills advice.

Fleurieu Study Hub is one of 12 Regional University Study Hubs announced earlier this year as part of the Australian Government’s commitment to double the number of study hubs across Australia.

Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP said:

“Today, almost one in two young people in their 20s and their 30s have a university degree. But not everywhere. Not in the outer suburbs and not in regional Australia.

“The Universities Accord makes it clear that we need more people from the regions and outer suburbs to get a university qualification. “I want more young people to get a crack at going to university and we know that postcode is a massive barrier for young people getting that chance.

“The evidence is that where University Study Hubs are, university participation goes up and that’s why we’re doubling them right across the country.

“Bringing university closer to where you live will encourage more people who otherwise might decide not to go to university at all to give it a crack.”

There are 46 hubs located across the country, of which 41 are operating. The remaining hubs are expected to be operational by Semester 1, 2025. In early 2024, almost 4,400 students were being supported by the 33 hubs that were operating, a 29 per cent increase since the same time last year. Since the program’s establishment, 12,836 students have been supported by a Regional University Study Hub.

Applications are currently open to establish up to 10 more hubs and will close at 5pm (AEDT) Friday, 18 October 2024.
