New Professional Experience Guidelines to support teaching students

New Professional Guidelines to Support Teaching Students - newsroom banner

On 1 November 2024, the Professional Experience Guidelines (the Guidelines) were launched to help initial teacher education (ITE) students receive high quality professional experience in the classroom before graduating.

These guidelines were developed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), and will improve consistency, and reduce administrative burden for initial teacher education providers, education systems, schools, early childhood settings and teacher regulatory authorities.

High quality professional experience provides pre-service teachers with opportunities to develop, practise and demonstrate their ability to teach and manage a classroom/learning environment.

Evidence shows that positive placement experiences mean ITE students are more likely to finish their education, make a successful transition to teaching, and remain in the profession long-term.

Further support will be available to ITE students from 1 July 2025 with the Commonwealth Prac Payment offering support to eligible students while they’re undertaking mandatory placements.
