New resources have been released for children and young people with disability and their parents and caregivers. The resources provide practical information about the rights of students with disability and the obligations of education providers under the Disability Standards for Education 2005.

The department worked with Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA) to develop information resources to help students with disability and their parents and caregivers understand their rights.

The content of these resources was created by students with disability and their caregivers with help from CYDA, and developed in consultation with a range of disability organisations and education authorities across Australia.

The new resources are:

  • Advocating for your child – The early years: this resource is for parents and carers and explains the rights of children with disability in Early Childhood Education and Care services.
  • Respect at school: this resource is for primary and secondary students. It helps students learn about respectful behaviour and teaches the importance of inclusion in decision-making.
  • Working together – Moving through secondary school: this resource is for secondary students and their caregivers. It supports transition from primary to secondary school and post-school pathways.
  • Our stories – Personal experience of young people with disability: this resource shares the lived experiences of two students with disability in education.

The Australian Government has published an implementation report on the recommendations of the 2020 Review of the Disability Standards for Education 2005 which demonstrates work to strengthen inclusive education. Learn more about the report on our website.
