The International Division is represented by the Australian Embassy in Tokyo. The Education and Research Office has overall responsibility for the department’s activities in Japan.

The government-to-government education relationship is underpinned by the 2015 Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA), and the 2018 Memorandum of Cooperation in Education. DESE seeks to reduce regulatory barriers, improve education cooperation and increase two-way mobility with Japan.
Australia is the most popular destination for Japanese study tours. Prior to the coronavirus, there were more than 33,000 Japanese school students visiting Australia for short-term visits each year. Australia is also the top sister school partner for Japan with approximately 550 arrangements. Australian universities reported around 700 formal partnerships with Japan in 2018, and have been shifting to more strategic partnerships, which include joint or double degree programs.
