Proposed changes to Indexation of HELP Loans

This content was published on Sunday 5 May 2024. There may be more recent updates available.

The Government has announced significant changes to the way HELP loans will be indexed, effective from 1 June 2023, subject to the passage of legislation.

The change would see the lower amount of either the Consumer Price Index or the Wage Price Index used to apply indexation. This is a change from the current arrangements where CPI is the amount used for indexation.

If you had an outstanding HELP loan that was indexed on 1 June 2023, and/or will be indexed on 1 June 2024, the Australian Taxation Office will automatically apply this credit to your HELP account. You can access information about this change and a HELP indexation credit estimator to help you understand these changes and how they may benefit you.
