New legislation that aims to lift national immunisation rates and ensure the safety of Australian children has been passed.

From 1 January 2016, all children under the age of 20 must be up-to-date with their immunisations, on a catch up schedule or have a medical exemption in order to continue receiving the Child Care Benefit (CCB), Child Care Rebate (CCR) and the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A payment.

Vaccination objections on the basis of personal or philosophical beliefs will no longer be a valid immunisation exemption for these family payments.

Exemptions will still apply for children with medical contraindications or natural immunity who have been assessed by a general practitioner.
